May i please kn0w the skate shop hours or is it open all the time or what thanks

Hi. Would it be possible for novices to ice-skate at the rink without learning? Our family, consisting of 2 adults and 2 kids (all who have never ice-skated before) just want to go and have fun and ice-skating seems to be a good idea. Kind regards.

For your birthday party, please call either Mike’s Kitchen on (011) 394 8607 or Panarottis on (011) 394 4190, to book. Tell them that you would like to have the ice skating deal and how many will skate.

I suggest going to the restaurant first to have your meal (they don’t deliver as it ends up being very cold when you get it), it also gets your whole group together so you know that everyone is there. Good idea is to take the pressies to the car at this point so they don’t get lost. The restaurant will issue you the ticket for skating when you settle the bill. Then go through to the rink and hand the doorman the tickets.

Parents watching definitely have no charge. So when requesting tickets at the cash box, ust state how many will be hiring skates and how many have their own skates.

Hi Ross, I hope you can assist. I contacted 011 3946702, but got ‘one-word-answers’ from the lady I spoke to. Please confirm : When I book a child’s birthday party, I can book through Panarottis or Mike’s Kitchen @ R80 per child, including the meal and skating.

Do I book for the parents who’ll be attending, or do I just bring them along?
Is the food delivered to the ice rink, or do we have the meal at the restaurant?
If there are parents who want to stay, but not skate, I understand that I don’t need to pay for them. Do I need to mention that it’s for a birthday party, because even though I never skate, I’ve always had to pay the entrance fee.

I was just browsing the site and came accross these emails…I would like to say to the one writer that my children will not go skating at Northgate. We only come to Festival. Northgate is too crowded, so playing tag on the ice is problematic, whereas at Festival it is great fun. From a security aspect, Festival is not as dark and dingy as Northgate, and when I look for my children on the ice I can find them easily. We have only ever had great experiences at Festival, and would not go elsewhere. The cost is expensive, but I would rather my children are skating than watching a movie! Keep it up. Thanks

Hi in terms of the combo (skating and lunch) who do we contact, the restaurant or the skating rink? It will only be for 5 children under the age of 12 will they still qualify for the combo rate. So IS it R80 for the combo, or just for the meal, and what will the charge be for the skates? Thanks

I know that it is very expensive to run an ice rink, so I’m glad to hear that you are doing extra to encourage more people to frequent your rink. I hope you will continue to try and keep the prices down. I agree that ice-skating should be fun and also healthy way to get some exercise. Sorry for my error about the manager. What I meant to say was that the duty manager should be and act more hip and trendy. I have the utmost respect for the rules and regulations of the rink, but his commentary makes me feel as though I am back in school again. Thank you for the offer of the complimentary tickets. Dear Festival Mall Ice Arena,

I am a skater from the old Boksburg ice Rink days and frequent your Ice Rink at Festival Mall every once in a while, along with my husband, who started skating at the old Benoni Ice rink. I can understand why kids these days see no attraction to ice skating at the Festival Mall rink.

The first problem I see is that the Ster Kinekor across the way from the ice-rink is charging only R27 to see a movie. So what do you think the kids decide to do with the pocket money their parents have just given them to spend on a Saturday night? Mmmm, let me see – entrance alone to the ice rink at R43, plus another R20 just to hire skates (R63 in total) or spend only R27 to see a movie. Even if I do buy a Cheap Skate Card at R350 for 10 entries, the movies are still a better option. Your ice-rink prices are too expensive and it’s easy to see which option the kids decide upon, looking at the poor attendance in your rink on a Saturday night which is the second problem.

Saturday night should be the busiest night of your week. Your closing time on a Saturday night is 11pm, but you may as well change it to 10:30pm as most of the people have already left or are busy packing up. When I skate, I like to skate with at least more than 100 people on the ice, so that it doesn’t get boring, so that there is some variety, and so that I am not just going through the motion of going around and around in a circle the whole time.

The third problem I see is that the manager at Festival Mall is from Noah’s Ark and even my husband can still clearly remember him from the Benoni Ice Rink so imagine how old he is now!! You need some young blood in there to stir things up and attract youngsters to the rink again with fresh promotions etc. When the manager talks on the loud speaker, instead of hearing him saying “No speeding, No smoking, No eating on the ice”, all I hear him saying is actually “No Fun”.

I hope you understand that I am not trying to be mean but I don’t see your ice-rink lasting at the rate things are going. Regrettably, the next time my husband and I feel like skating, we have decided we are going to go to Northgate instead. Even though it’s further to drive, and the same price etc., the vibe and the atmosphere there feels more alive, there are more people on the ice, and I think we’ll get more bang for our hard earned buck. This is just my own humble opinion. Hopefully you can put these comments to some positive use.
